Statics and Mechanics of Materials: An Example-based Approach is an introductory-level engineering textbook focusing on static structures and mechanics of materials. The contents of this interactive text include: Force systems, moments, couples and conditions for equilibrium in two- and three-dimensions; The calculation of the center of gravity, mass, volume and area; The analysis of frames, trusses and machines; Analysis of deformable bodies under axial and torsional loading considering thermal effects and static indeterminacy. The text combines an example-based approach with embedded questions to create a concept-example-question format to fortify the understanding of concepts while simultaneously building confidence. The 66 in-text examples prepare the students to answer the 195 embedded questions. Each chapter has an accompanying homework section which follows an introductory-intermediate-challenge format for each subsection within the chapter, totaling 382 problems. This tiered-system allows students to build their proficiency with the material through easier problems of lower point value, before moving to the more difficult, higher point value problems. Emphasis is placed on using MATLAB to solve various types equations and systems of equations. Suggested design projects that can be executed in a Makerspace or using computer-aided design and analysis software are provided.
